An important element of training golden retrievers used with pups has to address the matter of chewing. Golden retriever puppies are notorious for chewing who, left unsupervised, will chew all the way right through your home.

Not surprising really, as a pup makes use of its jaws to investigate its environment. A sport shoe or your favourite suede boots, a plastic toy or an iPhone, a piece of rag or a classy suit; they are not picky and they will mouth if they become bored or during teething or as a result of feeling lonely.

Puppy golden retrievers, like toddlers, are always exploring. They can be viewed as intrinsically inquisitive. So you should keep any property well out of reach. That includes anything you do not wish to go into the puppy’s mouth – books, newspapers, cell phones, garments, iPod, foodstuffs (in particular chocolate which is poison to canines) – and much more.

Make sure your home is safe for a puppy by confirming that household cleaning products, garbage and anything that may well choke a puppy are locked away or definitely beyond reach.

Dogs can be made to understand to stop chewing your possessions, nevertheless it will take sufficient determination and patience for success:

1. Start with avoidance. Restrict the pup to a particular zone until you are confident she has learned the limits. The more frequently it obtains a nibble of prohibited objects, the more likely she will attempt to replicate this misdeed.
2. Have plenty of chewing playthings at the ready. Accept that puppies need to chew. Therfore buy a lot of toys and provide her a small number at a time to enjoy, changing them regularly to prevent boredom.
3. Actively watch as much as possible. When she is allowed outside of her particular zone, she requires you to“steer” her as she examines the rules and discovers what is not permitted. When you can’t supervise your dog, put her in a crate for security, but please do not let her stay locked up for prolonged periods of time because she will soon get fed up.
4. Steer away from misunderstanding wherever possible. Never offer old boots or garments, etc., to amuse her because she will not be capable to appreciate the distinction between the old ones and the rest.
5. Whenever you catch her chewing, act without delay. Distract her by making a sudden sound and offer her a suitable substitute plaything or chew. When she takes it, praise her generously.

Keep in mind golden retrievers are eager to give pleasure, although accept that there will be failures as your pup finds out the rules of your home. It takes patience and repetition as in any facet of golden retriever puppy training. The more time you can give, the sooner your puppy will learn.
