Good things come to those who wait! This is true for people and dogs. Training and enforcing the Wait command creates a situation where your pup will look to you as a provider and a leader every time they approach a threshold. Doorways, stairs, gates, car doors, (and if you’re really advanced, interior boundaries like your kitchen) should all require your dog to wait until you give them the green light. If you think you’re really good at this exercise, try having him wait when you open the car garage door. Usually the sound of the electric opener will have him doing the limbo! If you can have your dog wait in the garage while you unload the bags from your car, you should give yourself a gold star for teaching him the value of being a well-behaved dog while keeping him safe. Don’t worry if you’re not there yet. Knowing it’s a goal is half the battle.
As with everything else in dog training, start out small and work your way up with plenty of “good-dogs” along the way. Begin getting your pup aware of the expectations you’re putting on him by practicing this exercise on-leash with normal-sized doors. If your dog is on-leash, you’ll be able to correctly guide him toward the behavior you want and then work your way up to off-leash and more exciting thresholds when you think he is up for the challenge. Remember, we want to set him up for successand condition him at a realistic pace. Imagine a world where your dog doesn’t push his way out of the car when you crack the tailgate. Nice huh?

As humans, we understand the importance of socialization for the sake of maintaining our own sanity. If we’ve been locked in the house for too long, we feel the need to get out and about. Actually, even after going to the office or the classroom for 8 hours a day, we still feel the need to do something extra in the evenings and on the weekends. We know this to also be the case with children. That’s why we sign them up for extra-curricular activities, sports and arrange play dates.
Well, we’re not the only ones that experience cabin fever. Our pups do too.
